Homeschooling Association Groups Dedicated To Making Homeschooling Possible

A homeschooling association is the place to go for homeschool help if you do not know where or how to get started on creating a homeschooling curriculum. These associations are dedicated to ensuring that those who are seeking homeschooling as an option for their children are able to do so in an efficient and effective manner. In addition to providing resources to families who homeschool their children, they generally also protect and serve the interests of the homeschooling community through political action.

What is their Interest?

These groups understand that there is a homeschooling advantage and a homeschooling disadvantage. Their purpose is to ensure that the disadvantages of homeschooling are softened and the advantages are strengthened. For example, they will often provide homeschool counseling to parents who have lots of questions as to how to get started. Additionally, they ensure that the homeschooling program that parents create for their children lives up to the standards of local, state, and federal laws.

Contacting These Associations

Associations in this field are easy to contact, as a few minutes of research online will allow you to find an association that can serve you best. They almost always have an easy to locate “contact us” option on their web pages, as they thrive on people reaching out to them for their support. Make sure that you choose an association that is most specific to your interests, because if you are looking to create a Christian homeschooling program for your child, you won’t want to contact an association that is dedicated to, for example, Native American homeschooling.

Why Choose to Join an Association?

An association of this nature will prove to be an excellent homeschooling resource. They will guide you in every way they can to ensure that you create a well-balanced homeschooling curriculum. For example, if you are interested in homeschooling online, they will more than likely show you how to access the best homeschooling software on the market. Additionally, they will likely be able to put you into contact with other, local parents that homeschool their children, allowing you to learn from their experience, which is always beneficial. After all, there is no need for you to repeat any mistake that another person has already made and learned from.

Do not think for a second that joining or affiliating yourself with one of these associations is the only way to homeschool your child properly. Many guides and resources are available outside of these associations that will aid you in making your homeschool dreams a reality. The only reason you should consider joining or affiliating yourself with one of these groups is if you feel that by associating with them, you will be able to provide a higher quality education for your child.

Remember, homeschooling is not as complicated as you might think it is. These associations are only for those who feel that they need them to create a better homeschooling program for their children.

Homeschooling Versus Public Schooling

When you look at academic achievements only, homeschooled children seem to advance quicker than their counterparts in public schools. A report published by the ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) shows that homeschool test scores were exceptionally high and well above that of public and private schools. They found that homeschool students in the 8th grade are four years ahead of their peers in public or private schools.

In a study conducted by Dr. Lawrence Rudner, he discovered that learners who were being homeschooled their entire school career, achieved the highest out of all the children.

Interesting information that came from this research was the difference that homeschooling made to the achievements of different race groups. There was very little difference found between the scores of white, black and Hispanic children in homeschooling. On the other hand, there was a significant difference between the achievements of different race groups attending public schools. Eight grade public school learners scored on average at the 58th percentile in math, where black children scored at the 24th percentile. White students scored at the 57th percentile in reading and Hispanic students at only the 28th percentile.

Dr. Ray, in his book, Strengths of Their Own, came to another interesting conclusion. The amount of money spend on tuition had no effect on the achievement of the child. In fact, the cheaper homeschooling option had better results than the far more expensive public schooling. In his research, based on statistics from 1998, he found that a homeschooled child cost parents on average $546 compared to the $5 325 for a public school learner. The average score for the homeschooled child was at the 85th percentile, where the score for the public school learner was averaged at the 50th percentile.

These research studies were done in a number of the states and in all the results the findings were the same. The homeschooled child scored on average 20-25 percentile points higher than their counterparts in public schools.

The research also found that the qualifications of the parent responsible for the schooling had no real affect on the achievement of the student.

Using Homeschooling Software To Educate Children

Although many people have a different opinion about the subject, homeschooling software has become popular for many different reasons. Lots of situations call for different solutions, and it isn’t any different when it comes to homeschooling. For this reason, homeschooling software has come into the picture and is here to stay.

How is Homeschooling Software Used?

The software can be purchased and used at home as an educational tool, or it can be used by participating in an online homeschooling program. In either case, it’s important for parents to supervise the school time of children, but homeschooling software would take care of all the essentials in general education. Reading material, course studies, instructional video and homework along with testing is all part of homeschooling software.

What homeschooling software does not do but should be implemented by the parents themselves, is offer on hands learning in the way of field trips, experiments, playing music or doing art projects to name a few.

Using Homeschooling Software Via an Education Program Online

This option would require a tuition fee, and sometimes even an enrollment fee. However parents don’t have to invest in the homeschooling software used through the homeschooling program. Everything is taken care of, and progress reports as well as grades are documented and shared with parents.

Keep in mind that homeschooling over the Internet still requires parent involvement in order for it to be successful. There are sometimes tutoring programs in addition to the general education programs offered through homeschooling programs online, which helps to enhance the learning experience for kids, especially in grade school.

Purchasing Homeschooling Software for Use at Home

This option may be more expensive up front depending on the quality of the homeschooling software you choose to purchase, but it can be well worth it. Using homeschooling software at home is ideal for parents who plan to be home with their children and assist with homeschooling, but don’t have the expertise or experience they feel they should have to create a complete school program themselves.

Many times, this software helps to inspire parents and give them ideas to help broaden and enlighten their children’s learning experience, making the software that much more valuable.

Some parents choose to use homeschooling software for part of a school day, and then finish up the day on their own. This works well too, as the software can pick up the slack where a parent might not be as skilled in teaching. In the end, it’s thought that homeschooling software can benefit a child’s schooling at home no matter what the situation is.

Homeschooling A Child With Cerebral Palsy

In 2007 more than 1.5 million students were homeschooled in the US, according to the United States Department of Education. That’s 37% more children than were homeschooled only four years before.

Schooling a child at home certainly isn’t for everyone. It requires commitment, determination, and patience. And, if you are the parent of a child with a birth injury such as cerebral palsy, this can be an even more challenging decision.

Nonetheless, homeschooling a special needs child is guaranteed by the United States Constitution. However, although the First and Fourth Amendments do guarantee these rights the state laws for homeschooling a special needs child may be stricter than it is for families of children who do not have special needs.

Many teachers and school officials try to discourage parents from homeschooling their special needs child. Therefore, it is very important that you educate yourself as fully as possible about your constitutional rights.

You can find the information you need by doing a search on the Internet for “Home School Legal Defense Association”.

There are also a number of things you may want to do to determine if homeschooling is your best option.

– Get familiar with all of the laws in your state and in your school district that pertain to homeschooling.

– Locate home school support groups. You may want to do an Internet search for “umbrella schools” and “consulting services” that are in your area as well.

– Find and talk to other people who have home schooled children that have special needs. Ask them what has and has not worked for them.

– Meet your local school officials and establish a positive, friendly relationship with them. Find out if there are any services that are offered by your local public school.

– Your state may permit your child to be enrolled in a home school as well as a public school. If this type of enrollment is available, consider if “dual enrollment” would be right for your child.

If you have any question as to whether or not you need any outside assistance do not even think about it. Get the assistance that you and your child need.

Homeschooling Facts Research Against Homeschooling

A lot of research has been done to proof that homeschooled childrens academic achievements are better than that of learners in public schools.

There is, on the other hand, very little research available to proof arguments against homeschooling.

Certain questions that were raised by experts in the education field can, however, not be ignored.

Regulation of homeschooling seems to lack dismally in most states of the USA. The parent has the freedom to teach any curriculum and some even work without a specific curriculum.

Marty Hittelman, the president of the California Federation for teachers, has a problem with the stringent standards, evaluation and training teachers are subjected to, in public schools, compared to homeschooling parents that are not expected to undergo training or any form of standardized evaluation.

According to the California Federation for Teachers, there are also no standards or specific exit exams imposed on homeschooling students, in the California region. This seems to be the rule rather than the exceptions in most of the states. Even though these arguments proof some problems regarding the control of homeschooling by the state, it is necessary to mention that regardless of this, most children being homeschooled still have much higher grades than most of their peers in public schools.

Further than these specific negatives been pointed out regarding the regulations by the state, the rest of the opposing arguments against homeschooling are just arguments and there is no research available to proof the validity of these arguments.

Many of these arguments point to possible problems, that any parent considering homeschooling should definitely be aware of.

Most of the arguments against homeschooling rather has to do with the ability of the family to provide the correct homeschooling opposed to definite research that homeschooling is wrong for everybody.

There is no argument against the fact that there are many challenges for homeschooling parents and children. Before homeschooling can be successful and be of more benefit to the child than public schooling, the parents will have to realize and overcome these challenges.

Homeschooling High School – How Much Is Too Much Writing

One frequent variation on the “how much is too much” question for homeschooling involves high school writing. Specifically, what is a usual, acceptable level of writing to ask your high school students to do?

Most high school student curriculum seem to have one 5-6 page paper assigned one or two times per year, with some smaller papers in between. In public school, students are generally asked to write one or two papers like that per year. I personally asked my children to write 500-1000 words per week when they were in 11th and 12th grade. That was about 1-2 pages typed and single spaced, most weeks of the year. It wasn’t all “English” because at times the papers were for History, French, or Art.

This might look like too much to you, but the reason our writing program was successful was because I taught my kids at their level, and I knew how much to push them so they wouldn’t break. That’s why homeschooling works. If you have them write AT THEIR LEVEL, they can learn. If you have them write too much, then they will get irritated, angry, or worse, rebel. I realize that I had my kids write a lot, and I know it was more than most. That’s what my kids did because they were capable, and both ended up being excellent writers. But the reason it was effective wasn’t because of how much I had them write, it was because I asked them to work at their level.

Trust yourself on that. If you are involved with a writing program, and the requirements are killing you – STOP! You’ll discover that each child in your family could be different, as well. Perhaps if you consider having them write for, say, an hour a day, that would be a more reasonable measure for high school. If you feel that your child is being asked to do too much, then I am 100% confident that it is too much.

Have them write each day, and have them write different things. Good writing is all about practice, which means that they do need to do some writing every day. But don’t push them so hard that they dislike writing. Keep a “five year plan” in mind, where they have a love of learning at the end of this wonderful homeschooling.

Pros Of Homeschooling

More freedom for you and your child

Are you tired getting frustrated forcing your child to wake up early in the morning, preparing for his lunch etc? Bringing him to school or picking him up? How about his home works? Ah! All these things controls your child’s everyday routine. Time, school obligation, responsibilities and requirements are exactly what deprive your child’s freedom. You child needs quality time to rest and sleep.

Your child will be free from the pressure of drugs or any crime in school

We heard of many stories about bullying, drugs, teenage pregnancy, abuse, smoking and alcohol in school. Homeschooling your child means his own safety from all those possible harms he will encounter if you send him to school

Shape your child the way you want and develop his skill

From the very beginning of your child’s life on earth, you knew him. You know his talents, skills and gifts. Would it not be easier for you to develop him and train him to reach his full potential? How about good qualities, you want your child to be responsible, honest, patient, kind and lovable? If you choose to homeschool your child, it will be all in the power of your hand to shape him. No one will twist it.

Your relationship will be built

You may know your child’s abilities but not his heart conditions. As your child continues to grow, there are many good and bad things emerging from his young heart. As you keep moulding him for his own good, your love and care for him will grow too. As he feels your love and concern, he will learn to love you in return. Your relationship is being built. The more time you spend together, the closer you will be with each other. Truly homeschooling is just a perfect option if you like that the relationship between and you and your child to be built.

Cost you just a fraction

Calculating the amount you will spend if you send your child to school will be thousands of dollars, but homeschooling your child will just cost you just a fraction. These are some of the pros of homeschooling. Of course there are pros of public school too. But we choose homeschooling because we agree the benefits we discussed.
